This site is run by Geraint Thomas, an independent biochemist and writer based in Cardiff. I’m the data controller for anything collected here. If you have a question about your data, write to hello@geraintthomasbio.com.
I collect very little. Here’s all of it.
Email sign-up
If you ask to be notified about the book, I collect your email address and nothing else. It’s held by Brevo, the email service I use, which sends a confirmation message first. I use the address only to tell you when The Damaged Skin Barrier is published and, occasionally, to share new articles. I won’t sell it, rent it or pass it to anyone else.
My lawful basis is your consent, and you can withdraw it at any time with the unsubscribe link in any message. I delete addresses on request, and the addresses of people who unsubscribe.
Analytics
I use Google Analytics 4, through Google’s Site Kit plugin, to see which articles are read and how people arrive. It sets cookies and records pages viewed, approximate location, device type and referring site. It doesn’t tell me who you are.
I use it to see which articles are read and to improve the site, and for nothing else. I don’t use it for advertising. My lawful basis is legitimate interests. You can opt out at any time by blocking analytics cookies in your browser or by installing Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Emails you send me
If you write to hello@geraintthomasbio.com or media@geraintthomasbio.com, I keep the correspondence for as long as it’s useful, then delete it. I use it only to reply.
Hosting and logs
The site is hosted by Hostinger. Like any web server, it records technical details of each visit, such as IP address and browser type, for security and troubleshooting. These logs are kept for a short period and not used to identify anyone.
Cookies
Cookies are small files your browser stores. The site sets the ones needed to work, plus the analytics cookies above if you accept them. You can refuse or delete cookies in your browser at any time.
Other sites
Articles link to journals, databases and other sites. I don’t control their privacy practices, so check theirs.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the data I hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its use, or take a copy of it. Email me and I’ll respond within one month.
If you’re unhappy with my response, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
