Independent science imprint

Lucidum Press

Clarity, built from evidence.

Lucidum Press is an independent science imprint founded by biochemist and author Geraint Thomas. It is the publishing home for his books, beginning with The Damaged Skin Barrier, and forms part of the wider scientific work behind Geraint Thomas Bio.

The imprint

Why it exists

Some questions need the space of a book. Following them means explaining the biology, examining the research and giving the reader enough context to understand how the conclusions were reached.

Lucidum Press was established to make room for that work. Its approach starts with mechanisms: how biological systems function, what regulates them and what happens when those systems come under pressure. The writing draws on primary literature, with care taken to explain what has been demonstrated, what is inferred and what remains unresolved.

DemonstratedInferredUnresolved

Skin biology is the starting point. The wider interest is in how cells and tissues respond to changing conditions, maintain themselves and sometimes fail. That connects the first book to Geraint’s background in cancer cell biology and the questions that continue to shape his work.

The aim is to give curious readers enough understanding to examine an explanation for themselves.

The first book

The Damaged Skin Barrier

A Biochemist’s Guide to Barrier Biology, Damage and Repair

Geraint Thomas, MBiochem

The Damaged Skin Barrier began with a personal question: why was an increasingly elaborate skincare routine making skin harder to understand?

The book follows that question through the biology of the barrier, organised around structure, regulation and pressure. It examines how the barrier is built, what disrupts it and what recovery requires, drawing on research across dermatology, cell biology, biochemistry and biophysics.

Written for scientifically curious readers, it explains the mechanisms behind damage and repair, with the evidence and its limitations kept in view. It contains no product recommendations, affiliate revenue or brand partnerships.
